TL;DR
Your camper already includes all cooking gear, bedding, linen, camp chairs, and a table. You need to bring: soft bags (not hard cases), your driver's licence, a reusable water bottle, layers for cold evenings, sunscreen and insect repellent, sandals for campsite showers, a small daypack, and any personal medications. Download Campermate before you fly.
Before we get into the NZ campervan packing list, one thing worth knowing: you need less than you think. Every campervan we hire out leaves our depot fully loaded — cooking gear, pots and pans, plates, cutlery, bedding, pillows, duvets, fresh linen and towels, camp chairs, a camp table, an outdoor mat, a basic cleaning kit, and a full gas supply. You could pick it up with nothing but a change of clothes and be completely self-sufficient. That said, there are a few things that will genuinely improve your trip that you'll need to sort yourself.
Pack soft luggage — duffel bags, backpacks, or soft-sided cases. Hard suitcases technically fit, but they take up disproportionate space and make the living area awkward. If you have oversized bags you don't need on the road, leave them with us — luggage storage is included with every booking, so you travel with only what you actually need. Bring your full driver's licence (and an International Driving Permit or certified English translation if your licence isn't in English or te reo Māori). Don't forget your credit card if you're on standard insurance — we hold a $3,000 bond as a pre-authorisation at pickup, released within 7 days of return. New Zealand's weather changes fast, especially in the South Island — pack a warm mid-layer and a waterproof jacket regardless of when you're travelling. Evenings can be cold even in summer. Sandals are genuinely useful at campsite shower blocks. A small daypack makes a big difference when you're doing walks or heading into town without wanting to carry everything. Reusable water bottles are essential — New Zealand tap water is excellent, and the camper has a 60–100L fresh water tank that you fill at holiday parks.
A few things you can safely leave behind: a tent (you have one already), sleeping bags (duvets and pillows are provided), any large cooking appliances (the camper's kitchen has everything), and most importantly — an overloaded itinerary. The most common piece of feedback we hear from returning renters is 'we wish we'd planned less and explored more.' Download the Campermate app before you fly. It maps every freedom camping spot, holiday park, and campsite in the country. That app, a full tank of gas, and a loose plan is honestly all you need.
