The best campervan route in New Zealand depends on how much time you have and which landscapes you want to see. With around a week, a focused North Island loop like the Coromandel Peninsula or the Rotorua and Taupo thermal route keeps the driving short and the highlights close together. With two weeks or more, you can add the ferry across Cook Strait and take on the South Island, where the glaciers, Milford Sound and the Mackenzie Basin are worth every extra day.
Every route on this page starts from our base in Auckland, so you can collect your camper, stock up, and be on the road the same day. If your trip runs the length of the country, you can also drop the camper in Christchurch as a one-way rental, which saves you doubling back. Auckland to Auckland stays the simplest and best-value option.
New Zealand rewards travellers who slow down. The roads are scenic and often winding, so plan shorter driving days than the distances suggest, and leave room to stop when a view or a beach pulls you in. Remember that you drive on the left, and give yourself the first day to settle in.
