Our name is JustGoodCampers, so we made sure to put our money where our name is. The Kākāpō is a top-spec European motorhome, built by Laika in Tuscany, the same calibre the big-name New Zealand brands run in their fleets. Italian build quality, a thoughtful layout, and finished to a standard that doesn't rattle apart after a week on gravel.

You'll sleep on proper fixed beds with real mattresses. Two singles in the back that join into a king, and a clever electric double above the lounge that lowers at the touch of a button. No folding cushions into shape at the end of a long day. Just climb in.

Honestly? It just feels like home. The seats swing around so all four of us can sit down to dinner at a proper table, there's a real bathroom with a wash basin and a sliding panel that turns into a shower, and at night we close it off to make a cosy little bedroom at the back. Everything has been thought of, so the only thing left for you to do is enjoy the trip.

The Kākāpō sleeps four across two proper sleeping areas. In the back, two fixed single beds with real mattresses, ready to climb into, or joined together with an infill to make one big king-size. Above the lounge, an electric double bed that lowers at the touch of a button and lifts back up during the day to give you all your living space back. No folding cushions into shape, no rebuilding your bed every night. Just real beds, and room to spread out.

Most families who book the Kākāpō are doing the trip of a lifetime with children in tow, and we are happy to help you think it through. We have done trip after trip ourselves with a baby and a toddler on board, which has made us something of specialists. Here's how it actually works.

The drop-down double above the lounge makes an excellent children's bunk — it comes down at the touch of a button and has a safety net so nobody rolls out in the night. The big bed in the back takes a safety net too, once it is made up. That leaves the rear of the camper to the grown-ups, with the bathroom between the two — and the toilet door closes across the middle, separating the sleeping end from the back. So you get your evening to wind down without whispering through it.

Having a toilet on board matters more than people expect, too: no torch-lit walk across a dark campsite at two in the morning with a half-asleep toddler.

Child seats we provide on request at no extra cost — just tell us your children's ages when you book and we'll have the right ones fitted and waiting. And the Kākāpō is an automatic, which on your first days driving on the left, on unfamiliar roads, with children in the back, is one fewer thing to think about.
