Bay of Plenty
Surf beach on one side, harbour on the other, and a walk up the Mount in between.
Mount Maunganui packs a lot into a small spit: a long white-sand surf beach, a sheltered harbour side, hot saltwater pools and the climb up Mauao for a sweeping Bay of Plenty view. It's a relaxed, sunny beach-town base a few hours from Auckland.
Beachside camping here is walking distance from the sand, the cafés and the pools. It's a popular summer spot, so book your nights ahead.
The campground sits directly at the base of Mauao, the volcanic cone at the end of the peninsula, and the walk to the summit takes about forty minutes of steady climbing for a view down both sides of the beach. The ocean side has the surf, the harbour side has flat water and hot saltwater pools. It is a genuinely busy holiday town in January and quiet the rest of the year.
