Aoraki / Mount Cook
A basic DOC campground right under Aoraki/Mount Cook, at the start of the Hooker Valley Track.
White Horse Hill sits at the road end in Aoraki/Mount Cook National Park, with New Zealand's highest peak on the skyline and the Hooker Valley Track leaving straight from the campground. It's first-in, first-served and hugely popular in summer — the payoff is a dark-sky night in one of the country's best stargazing reserves.
An easy self-contained camper stop: level gravel, mountain views from the door, and Mount Cook Village minutes away for the visitor centre and cafés. Come prepared for alpine weather that can turn quickly, even in summer.
