Raglan Camping: Surf, Black Sand and Where to Stay

TL;DR

Raglan, on the Waikato's west coast, is New Zealand's laid-back surf capital — black-sand beaches, a world-famous left-hand point break at Manu Bay, and a relaxed small-town vibe. Camping is mainly at Raglan Holiday Park and the Te Kopua campground by the harbour; freedom camping in town is restricted. Book ahead in summer. It's an easy two-hour drive from Auckland or 45 minutes from Hamilton.

Raglan runs at its own pace. Two hours from Auckland, this little west-coast town is all black-sand beaches, world-class surf and cafés where nobody's in a hurry. Spend a night and you'll understand why people come for a weekend and stay a week.

Camping in Raglan is mostly at two spots: the Raglan Holiday Park and the Te Kopua campground, both by the harbour and estuary near town. Freedom camping in Raglan is restricted, so book a campground, especially in summer. The town is famous for its surf — Manu Bay's long left-hand point break is one of the best in the world.

Where to camp

Raglan Holiday Park sits on the harbour's edge, a short walk or paddle across the estuary to the town — powered sites, cabins and a mellow atmosphere. The neighbouring Te Kopua campground offers a simpler, grassy option right by the water. Both are popular and book out over summer and long weekends, so reserve early.

The surf

Raglan is a surfing pilgrimage. Manu Bay, the break made famous by the film The Endless Summer, delivers a long, peeling left that draws surfers from around the world, while Whale Bay and Ngarunui Beach suit different levels — Ngarunui, patrolled in summer, is the spot for beginners and lessons. Even if you don't surf, the sunsets over the black sand are worth the trip.

Beyond the beach

Inland, the 155-metre Bridal Veil Falls is a short forest walk and a stunning stop. Back in town, Raglan's cafés, art studios and Sunday markets are part of the charm. It's an easy, relaxed base for a night or three.

Getting there and freedom camping

Raglan is about two hours from Auckland and 45 minutes from Hamilton, on a winding road worth taking slowly. Freedom camping in and around town is limited and enforced, so plan on a campground rather than a lay-by, and check the CamperMate app. Pair it with a North Island route and travel self-contained — see our campers.

Frequently asked questions

It's restricted. Freedom camping in and around Raglan is limited and enforced, so most travellers book the Raglan Holiday Park or Te Kopua campground. A certified self-contained camper gives you the most options.

Yes. Ngarunui Beach is patrolled in summer and good for swimming and learning to surf, while the harbour and estuary are calmer. Take care with west-coast surf and rips.

Its surf — Manu Bay is one of the world's best left-hand point breaks — plus black-sand beaches, a relaxed small-town vibe, and nearby Bridal Veil Falls.
