Raglan's campground sits on a sand spit in the harbour, with a footbridge straight into town.
Te Kopua is the reason people end up staying in Raglan longer than they planned. The campground occupies its own spit of land in the harbour, and a curved footbridge takes you over the water into the middle of town in about four minutes on foot. You can leave the camper parked for three days and not need it once.
The harbour side is sheltered and shallow — good for kids, paddleboards and swimming at high tide. The famous surf is not here but at Manu Bay and Whale Bay, a ten-minute drive west, where the left-hand point break draws surfers from around the world. You do not have to surf to enjoy watching it from the cliff.
It is popular and it books out over Christmas and New Year, so plan ahead for those weeks. Outside the school holidays you can usually turn up. Raglan itself is a small town that has kept its character: good coffee, a Sunday market, and not a chain restaurant in sight.
