Marlborough Sounds
A DOC campground right on the water in Queen Charlotte Sound, twenty minutes from the Picton ferry.
Momorangi Bay is the campground to know if you are arriving on the ferry or catching an early one. It sits directly on the shore of Queen Charlotte Sound on the Queen Charlotte Drive, about twenty minutes from Picton, with sites on grass a few metres from calm water.
The bay is sheltered enough for swimming and paddling, and the bush behind runs up into the hills with a short walking track through it. Weka wander through the campground with total confidence and will investigate anything you leave out, which is entertaining until it is your sandwich.
It is well set up for campers — powered sites, hot showers, a kitchen — and it books out from December through February. The Queen Charlotte Drive to get there is narrow and winding with tight corners, so take it slowly and allow more time than the distance suggests.
