Getting things ready…
For two
A 2-berth campervan is the easiest way to see New Zealand as a couple or on your own: small enough for the narrow roads and the tucked-away campsites, and still fully self-contained so you can stay at freedom camping spots. Both of ours come with bedding, cooking gear, camp chairs and an airport transfer, from NZ$75 a day.

Just Good Enough

Both of our 2-berth campervans sleep two, carry their own water and have a toilet on board, which is what a Certificate of Self-Containment asks for. That certificate is the thing that decides where you can legally park overnight, and it is why a small camper in New Zealand is not a compromise: you reach the places a big motorhome can't turn around in, and you can still stay the night.
The difference between the two is how they are laid out rather than how good they are. The Pīwakawaka has a pull-out kitchen at the back and a living area that converts to a large bed, runs on petrol so there are no road user charges to settle, and has solar panels and batteries that keep themselves topped up while you drive. The Tūī has a fixed double bed, so there is no making it up each evening, and an inside kitchen with a fridge.
Neither has a shower or an oven. That is deliberate at this size: both take up space you would rather use for living in, and holiday parks and DOC campsites have showers. If you want those, the 4-berth Kākāpō has a hot shower, heating and a full kitchen with an oven.
Pricing is per day and changes by month, because demand does. June to August is winter and the quietest, January and February are the New Zealand summer holidays and the busiest. The price you see is the price you pay: bedding, cooking gear, camp chairs, luggage storage and the airport transfer are in it, and we don't sell packages on top. Our minimum hire is seven days from Auckland, and fourteen if any night of your trip falls in December, January or February.
Each camper's own page has the full month-by-month table, and you can see live availability and a total for your dates in the booking form before you pay anything.
Auckland is our base, and most trips start there. Christchurch is also a pickup point, and you can take a camper one way between the two. We collect you from the airport ourselves, which takes about half an hour with the handover included, and we store whatever you don't need on the road at no cost.
We're a family running three campers, not a depot. Write to us and one of us answers, usually the same day. Real people, real answers, no call centres.
Tell us where you're going and how long you have, and we'll say which one we'd take. No pressure, and we'll tell you if the 4-berth is the better fit.
